桑达克于1964年以《野兽国》一书获凯迪克金奖；1970年获安徒生插画奖；为表彰他的整体创作，1983年美国图书馆协会颁发其罗兰英格斯怀尔德奖；1996年获美国国家荣誉艺术奖章；2003年荣获国际林格伦儿童文学奖。

莫里斯桑达克的作品包括《野兽国》《厨房之夜狂想曲》《在那遥远的地方》（这三部作品并称为桑达克最著名的图画书三部曲。）《肯尼的窗子》《罗丝房门上的记号》《坚果图书馆》（包括《鸡汤加米饭》《鳄鱼之家字母书》《约翰尼的数数书》以及《皮埃尔》），《乱七八糟，吧嗒》《亲爱的小莉》《我和杰克、盖伊都很沮丧》《糊涂的阿尔蒂》以及他最后的作品《致我的兄弟》等。

他为美国作家赫尔曼梅尔维尔和德国作家亨利希冯克莱斯特的作品画过插图。他把关于写书和插画的儿童文学随笔，收集在《凯迪克奖与公司：书籍图片注》（1988年）一书中。
